Flutterby Sauvingon Blanc 2011

By , 8 March 2012

Nice from far, far from nice.

I thought Boland Cellar were onto something with their Flutterby wines in PET bottles. Packaging with undoubted benefits for the environment, attractive branding and a competitive price point – the Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé and Merlot all selling at R29.99 a bottle.

That’s until I tasted the wines. The Sauvignon Blanc is undistinguished but the best of a bad bunch – it’s rather neutral and excessively acidic but if you use your imagination, there’s probably a bit of citrus flavour (score: 14/20), the Rosé shows some strawberry flavour but is generally plain, simple and short (score: 13.5/20); and finally the Merlot is vile – an earthy, tarry note on the nose, while the palate is lean and mean and lacks balance (score: 13/20).
