Granny Smith Nouvelle 2013
By Christian Eedes, 25 March 2014
I admit to a fatal fascination with Nouvelle. The Pinot Noir-Cinsaut cross that is Pinotage has yet to take the world by storm so what hope for the Ugni-Blanc-Semillon cross which constitutes Nouvelle? Still, if somebody of the calibre of Bartho Eksteen, Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in 2010, thinks it’s worth including in his flagship Hermanuspietersfontein Die Bartho perhaps there’s something to it…
Boland Cellar has just released an entry-level version from the 2013 vintage under the label Granny Smith (R37 a bottle). Grapes are from a farm near Perdeberg, where the first commercial vineyard of this variety was planted in 1997 and as the name suggests the wine has a pronounced green apple character while there’s also no ignoring the pyrazine character that the variety is known for. It leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination.
