Fryer’s Cove Bamboes Bay Sauvingon Blanc 2014

By , 12 October 2015

Spring Day might be celebrated on 1 September but it’s only recently that the weather has been sufficiently warm to make reviewing new-release Sauvignon Blanc not completely daunting.

Fryer’s Cove Winery is situated in Doringbaai, which lies some 350km north of Cape Town on the West Coast. The premium Bamboes Bay Sauvignon Blanc has always been highly acclaimed and now a more affordable version under the Doringbay label has been launched. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Doringbay Sauvignon Blanc 2015
Approximate retail price: R75

Grapes from Bamboes Bay, Elands Bay and Lutzville Valley. Gravel road dustiness and fresh herbs on the nose. The palate, meanwhile, shows green melon before some peppery bite on the finish. Thick textured but also possessing zippy acidity, the finish nicely dry.

#WinemagRating: 88/100.

For when you’re sittin’ on the dock of the bay.

Approximate retail price: R120

Grapes from Bamboes Bay exclusively, a small portion fermented and matured for three months in barrel. Lime and white peach to go with top notes of nettles and white pepper. A well balanced wine with good flavour intensity, coated acidity and a gently savoury finish. Understated and sophisticated.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
