Genevieve Blanc de Blancs 2019

By , 25 January 2024

Melissa Nielsen has long used Chardonnay from a vineyard on the Van der Stel Pass outside Bot River for her bubbly but in 2019 started supplementing this with fruit from another block closer to town itself.

Spending 48 months on the lees before disgorgement, the 2019 is again designated as “Extra Brut”, residual sugar being 3.2g/l. The nose shows a hint of reduction before lots of yeasty complexity and maybe a touch of liquorice. The palate is rich and broad (alc: 12.5%) with a creamy mousse and a gently savoury finish – will appeal to those who don’t like their bubbly too lean and seering. Price: R315 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
