Grangehurst Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1993
By Christian Eedes, 13 April 2015
Some older Stellenbosch reds over the weekend consisting of the 1993 and 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot from Grangehurst and the Cabernet Franc Merlot 1998 as made by Chris Keet under the Cordoba label for the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction.
1995 is generally considered vintage of the decade in Stellenbosch and the Grangehurst was indeed the most complete wine of the three.
The Cordoba meanwhile appeared slightly too heavily oaked and seemed to lack the stuffing that some Cabernet Sauvignon might have lent it.
The real surprise, however, was the 1993 – very little browning around the rim, more medium bodied than the 1995 but very much alive. I’m generally sceptical regarding the ability of modern South African wine to mature with benefit but drink at the top of the pyramid and occasionally you are pleasantly surprised.
