Stellenbosch cellar Grangehurst, founded by Jeremy Walker in 1992, keeps a relatively low profile these days, but in the 1990s it stood among the Cape’s quality leaders. In the decade from Wine magazine’s inception in 1993 to 2003, only 11 wines achieved a 5-Star rating, two of these came from Grangehurst, these being the Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1993 and the CWG Auction Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1995.

A recently opened bottle of the CWG Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2000 proved very good drinking. Cassis, violets, a hint of liquorice, pencil shavings and earth on the nose lead into a palate of good fruit depth, fresh acidity and tannins that remain more or less grippy. Dense, structured, even a little chunky, perhaps lacking some detail, but with remarkably little decay in evidence.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Two questions arise. First, how many producers of the modern era are truly set to last? And second, what does the Cape do better: straight Cabernet Sauvignon, or some permutation of the five classic red Bordeaux varieties (see Tim James on the subject here)?

If you can answer the questions… Which is better… Kanonkop Paul Sauer or Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon…. you might find your answer! But of course, this is tongue in cheek, as it is impossible to generalise. Some prefer the blend, others prefer the straight cultivar expression. No one is right, no one is wrong. We should, as an industry, count ourselves as blessed that we can rustle up such incredble creations from all the 5 Bordeaux varieties! Our top expressions are some of the finest quality and most ageworthy wines produced anywhere in the world.
