Groot Constantia Sauvignon Blanc 2012 vs. Lomond Sauvignon Blanc 2012

By , 7 June 2013

Relative triumphs.

Relative triumphs.

Last night Groot Constantia Sauvignon Blanc 2012 up against Lomond Sauvignon Blanc 2012, the former winner of the Constantia Trophy, the South African Sauvignon Blanc Trophy and the South African White Trophy at this year’s International Wine Challenge and the latter awarded a gold medal at the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon.

The Groot Constantia (R106 a bottle) was impressive. A tantalising nose of white pepper and fynbos before a palate showing good weight and coated acidity. Flavours were subtle and relatively intricate spanning the spectrum from green bean through lime to grape fruit.

Score: 89/100.

As for the Lomond (R60), well, if the purpose of Sauvignon Blanc is to be inoffensive, then this succeeds brilliantly being lightly fruity with a slight herbal overtone and possessing very gentle acidity.

Score: 83/100.
