Hartenberg Chardonnay 2017

Life’s not all bad when you can buy the excellent Chardonnay 2017 from Stellenbosch property Hartenberg from the local Kwikspar for R157.99 a bottle.
Matured for 11 months in French oak, of which 20% was new, this is an archetypal example of the variety. Citrus is the obvious aromatic but also notes of blossom, struck-match reduction, some waxiness, vanilla and spice. The palate, meanwhile, has both heft and verve – a solid core of fruit matched by fresh acidity. What you get when vineyard, vinology and vintage all come together for good.
CE’s rating: 93/100.

I thought your local kwikspar is halal?

Hi David, The wine was purchased from the Oakhurst Kwikspar next door to the excellent pizza restaurant that is Massimo’s in Hout Bay so a bit of poetic licence on my part!

I just happened to drink a 2015 of this last night. We felt that the wine hasn’t really evolved much at all yet after five years. It should probably keep on improving for quite a while still.
