Haut Espoir Gentle Giant 2009
By Christian Eedes, 20 July 2015
The Gentle Giant 2009 from Haut Espoir in Franschhoek might have been an entrant in the RisCura Red Hot Wine Awards featuring Bordeaux-style red blends (results to be announced on 5 August) but for the fact that in addition to 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 23% Petit Verdot and 5% Cab Franc, it contains 9% Tannat a red wine grape historically grown in South West France but in the Madiran AOC rather than Bordeaux.
At R80 a bottle, it offers terrific quality relative to price. On the nose, red and black fruit, violets and an attractive herbal quality. It’s medium- to full-bodied, sweet-fruited on entry but also possessing fine, spicy tannins. Ready to drink now.
Score: 90/100.
