It was 1994 when Haute Cabrière in Franschhoek became the first cellar to make a still wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the standard label now ubiquitous and much imitated.

To mark three decades of the blend, a limited-edition bottling from the 2024 vintage consisting of 78% Chardonnay and 22% Pinot Noir, co-fermented in 550-litre amphorae. Aromatics of floral perfume, pear, citrus and a hint of strawberry precede a palate that shows clean fruit and racy acidity, the finish dry. With an alcohol of 12.5%, it’s quite light and lean but I think this serves the wine well. Price: R590 a bottle (compared to the current-release standard label at R120 a bottle).

CE’s rating: 90/100.

Hi Christian, thank you for the review and I am glad you enjoyed the wine. It was a great experience making it as a celebration of the legacy of Chardonnay Pinot Noir and only 696 bottles were produced from one Amphora. The 2 Vineyards used where special as well, the Chardonnay was planted in 1983 on our bottom property where Achim started Pierre Jourdan originally, and the Pinot Noir planted in 1991 on the Top (Haute) property just before building the cellar up on the pass started. Available from the tasting room and online only.
