Lucinda Heyns completed her BSc in Viticulture and Oenology in 2006. She’s subsequently worked as a viticulturist for both commercial operations and research organisations, and launched her own label, Illimis – Latin for “clarity” – in 2015. Tasting notes and ratings for current releases:

Chenin Blanc 2024
Price: R310
From Stellenbosch grapes after the Elgin vineyard that usually features was compromised by fire and potential smoke taint. Matured for eight months in older oak. Peach, orange and a yeasty undertone on the nose. The palate is rich and flavourful – concentrated fruit and bright acidity before a savoury, slightly bitter finish. Alc: 13.5%.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Grenache Noir 2024
Price: R290
From Wellington. 50% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for eight months in older oak. Cranberry, strawberry, rose, fynbos, spice and a touch of earth on the nose. Lean and fresh with chalky tannins. Elegant and taut with a super-dry finish. Alc: 12.5%.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Pinotage 2024 was best overall in the Prescient Fund Services category report earlier this year with a rating of 95 – see here. It stands as one of the most compelling and exciting expressions of the variety currently in circulation.
