Iona Chardonnay 2008

Growing old gracefully.

Growing old gracefully.

It seems to me that if modern-era South African reds generally reach their peak a little earlier than one might like, then the whites don’t get enough credit for their age-worthiness.

Last night a bottle of Chardonnay 2008 from Iona in Elgin. Half oaked, 20% new, it showed some marmalade and peach. On the whole, however, it’s no longer primary and has a quite earthy, savoury sense about it. Rich and quite broad, it certainly has extra interest by virtue of time in bottle. Great with chicken and ham pie. How much longer to go? Drinking old wine is ultimately a factor of your individual tolerance for developed characteristics.

Score: 88/100.
