Iona Fynbos Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2021

By , 11 October 2023

This single vineyard with clay-rich, north-facing soils on Elgin property Iona is meant to make for wines of more depth and weight  and I must agree.

In the case of the 2021 vintage, winemaking involved spontaneous fermentation and maturation lasting 12 months in 228- and 300-litre barrels, 20% new. The nose is expressive with notes of lemon, orange, baked bread, bee’s wax and even mushroom. On the palate, dense fruit and tangy acidity before a savoury finish. Flavour packed and yet alcohol is just 12.5%. Complex, balanced and just delicious. Price: R645 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
