Jason’s Hill Beatrix Chenin Blanc 2016

Delicate and pretty.

Jason’s Hill in the Slanghoek ward of Breedekloof won gold for the label of its Beatrix Chenin Blanc 2016 at the recent Wine Label Design Awards, the judges praising the design for its great craftsmanship in execution resulting in a strikingly “feminine” outcome.

The wine itself is pretty accomplished, too. It was matured for 14 months in 100% new Hungarian oak but happily there’s not too much oak-derived character. Instead, the nose shows white peach, citrus, some reductive pong and a little waxiness, which all come together to good effect. The palate is marked by concentrated fruit and bright, quite punchy acidity before a savoury finish (alcohol: 13%).  Price: R180 a bottle.
