Joostenberg Fairhead 2023
By Christian Eedes, 18 June 2025
The Cape White Blend that is Fairhead epitomises what the Myburghs of Paarl property Joostenberg are all about. Named after former matriarch and gardener extraordinaire Gillian whose maiden name was Fairhead, it’s unpretentious it’s unpretentious yet quietly rewarding – offering more than fair quality for its R235 price tag.
Made from organically grown grapes, it’s a blend of 42% Chenin Blanc, 25% Roussanne, 20% Viognier and 13% Alvarinho while maturation lasted 10 months in a combination of old oak, concrete tanks and amphorae.
Notes of soft citrus (naartjie), orange, peach and apricot, with hints of herbs, ginger and spice on the nose. The palate shows concentrated fruit offset by tangy acidity, leading to a gently bitter finish. Not especially elegant, nor overly forceful – it strikes a pleasing balance and carries itself well. Alc: 13.5%.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
