Fashion is fickle and with everyone pre-occupied with reds which are medium bodied and can be drunk slightly chilled, Bordeaux-style blends which tend to be more intense seem to be suffering from a lack of attention.

For those who still like their reds to be substantial, Jordan Cobblers Hill 2011 is a fine proposition. A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot & 10% Cabernet Franc, it was matured for 24 months in oak, 70% new and at this stage of its life, it’s nothing if not dense and brooding.

The nose is initially quite closed but opens up wonderfully to reveal cassis, cranberry, violets, vanilla and oak spice. The palate is rich and full with optimally ripe fruit, snappy acidity and firm but fine tannins. There’s also an herbaceous edge to the wine – definitely not minty and quite attractive, providing lift and refreshment. Price: R269 a bottle.
