You get quite a lot of wine for your money with the 2024 vintage of Sonsteen Chenin Blanc from Kaapzicht in Stellenbosch. Sourced from a 1985 vineyard, this sees three days of skin contact and 10 months’ maturation in old oak. The nose is distinctive – marmalade, stone fruit, ginger, and a touch of menthol – while the palate is full and textured, tangy acidity lending drive, the finish savoury and slightly grippy. More about character than refinement, it’s yours for R180 a bottle.
