Kaapzicht Steytler new releases

By , 9 July 2024

Bottelary property Kaapzicht has long been associated with top-end Pinotage and the Pinotage-inclusive Cape Blend known as Vision. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Steytler Pinotage 2021
Price: R740
From a block of bush vines planted in 1995. Matured for 20 months in barrel, 80% new. Cherries, plums, earth, vanilla and a hint of spice on the nose. The palate is well balanced with pure fruit, fresh acidity and grippy tannins Not too luscious or opulent despite a hefty alcohol of 14.59%.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Steytler Vision 2021
Price: R740
From dryland vines planted between 1995 and 2002. Matured for 20 months in barrel. 56% Pinotage, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. The nose shows red cherry, cassis, vanilla and spice. Clean fruit, fresh acidity and firm tannins. This is clearly an ambitious wine but as so often with Cape Blends, it appears slightly disjointed. Alc: 14.5%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
