Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2014

Setting the pace.

If you’re going to discuss which South African wines are in the running for icon status, then you are obliged to include the natural sweet that is Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia. Volume produced is dependent on vintage conditions – none made in 2003 and 2010 but otherwise varying from 12 000 to 35 000 bottles, while the Wine Cellar price for the current release 2014 is R990 per 500ml bottle.

From Muscat de Frontignan as ever, the 2014 is again immaculately judged – harvested in batches, the wine was matured for 36 months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak plus French Acacia. The nose is exceptionally aromatic with notes of flowers and fynbos before citrus, stone fruit, burnt sugar and spice. The palate is not too rich but nevertheless has a lovely presence about it, while the finish is long and savoury. Complex and balanced, this is truly world-class.

Editor’s rating: 97/100.
