Kloovenburg Carignan 2016
By Christian Eedes, 22 June 2018
Kloovenburg in the Swartland is a 300ha property with some 130ha under vineyard. The first commercial releases were in 1998 and it was the first few vintages of the Shiraz which particularly caught the eye. More recently, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Shiraz and Carignan have been planted in line with general trends in the area.
Kloovenburg Carignan 2016
Wine Cellar price: R175
20% whole-bunch fermentation and matured for 14 months in old oak. Black cherries, earth and spice on the nose. The palate is light bodied with good fruit definition, fresh acidity and a slight stalkiness to the finish. Alcohol is 13% and there’s a pleasant sweet ‘n sour quality to drinking it.
Editor’s rating: 88/100.
Kloovenburg Grenache Noir 2017
Wine Cellar price: R175
30% whole-bunch fermentation and matured for 10 months in old oak. Vague notes of red cherry, cranberry and some floral perfume. Light and pretty with bright acidity and soft tannins – could arguably do with some more intensity but perhaps this was hard to come by in this difficult vintage?
Editor’s rating: 87/100.
