Kottabos new releases
By Christian Eedes, 4 April 2024
The Kottabos range from Reenen Borman of Boschkloof is is intended to showcase the terroir of Polkadraai Hills. The single-variety Chenin Blanc and the Grenache-Syrah blend have always offered good quality relative to price and these are now joined by a Pinotage that has every chance of attracting a cult following. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:
Chenin Blanc 2023
Price: R210
60% percent whole-bunch fermented for a total of six days. Matured in older French oak barrels for 11 months. Peach, orange, potpourri and a hint of ginger on the nose. The palate is well balanced with good fruit expression and tangy acidity and a gently savoury finish. Should have broad appeal no matter the time on skins. Alc: 12.5%.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
Grenache Syrah 2023
Price: R210
73% Grenache, whole-bunch fermented and matured in concrete; 27% Syrah that was destemmed and matured in older French oak. Cranberry, strawberry and white pepper on the nose. Clean fruit, fresh acidity and very fine tannins make for easy drinking. An ever so slight bitterness to the finish adds interest. Alc: 13%.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
Pinotage 2023
Price: R210
NEW. Winemaking involved 100% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 11 months in older oak. Alluring aromatics of cherry, pomegranate, fynbos and spice while the palate is light but equally well structured – pure fruit, lemon-like acidity and some spicy bite to the finish. A smart addition to the growing number of wines from this variety made according to “New Wave” principles. Alc: 13%.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
