La Motte Franschhoek Syrah 2016
By Christian Eedes, 1 February 2019
The Syrah from La Motte was a multi-regional blend for a long time but since 2015, grapes are sourced exclusively from this cellar’s own Franschhoek vineyards. The 2016 was matured for some 18 months in 300-litre barrels, 30% new and contains 15% Durif for colour and structure. Alcohol: 13.79%.
The nose shows a hint of reduction before red and black fruit, cracked black pepper and a certain wild herb quality. The palate is medium bodied with good freshness and smooth tannins making it very approachable. Total production: 52 800 bottles. Price: R166 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
