La Motte Méthode Cap Classique 2013

More rapier than broadsword.

Méthode Cap Classique is difficult category to judge because 1) it’s so technically complicated to produce and 2) there is disagreement among judges as to what basic style should prevail some preferring lean and fresh, others rich and full.

I liked the La Motte MCC for its restraint. A blend of 68% Chardonnay and 32% Pinot Noir grown on the Franschhoek property, it includes 15% of the base wine was from the 2012 vintage, matured in barrels. Maturation on the lees lasted 32 months and the wine was degorged without dosage.

Citrus, pear and white peach plus baked bread on the nose. Lean and fresh on the palate with a very fine mousse and a bone-dry finish. A sophisticated aperitif. Price: R299 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.
