La Motte Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc 2020
By Christian Eedes, 16 March 2021
La Motte’s premium range is a tribute to South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886 – 1957), a nice touch being that each new release reflects a different piece by him on the label.
As always, the 2020 vintage of the Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc is made in a serious, age-worthy style. A blend of 94% Sauvignon Blanc and 6% Semillon, the former variety from vineyards in Elim, Napier, and Elgin, and the latter from Elim.
The nose shows citrus, green apple, peach, and melon with a hint of fennel in the background while the palate shows pure fruit and fresh acidity, the finish long and savory (alcohol is 12.62%). Five months on the lees ensures palate weight and prevents the wine from being too severe. Price: R149 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
