Lammershoek White Mysteries 2017

At the recent launch of the Mysteries range from Swartland property Lammershoek, the white blend particularly attracted attention. A blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay, the nose shows citrus, stone fruit and even a little pineapple plus the merest hint of yeasty complexity. The palate meanwhile is rich (impressively so given an alcohol of just 12%) yet still fresh thanks to tangy acidity. Very good fruit definition, the finish long and dry, this manages to be complex and more-ish at the same time. Price: R170 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.

Dear Christian
What of the other wines in the range? I would love to know your thoughts, good or bad.
Regards

Hi Dion, The overall standard of quality is good. The Chenin is very good as you’d expect for a wine made from Swartland old vines, the HarsleveIu quite stern and something of a curiostiy, the Chardonnay perfectly sound, the orange wine perhaps a bit “safe”.
As for the reds, I think the Tinta Barocca is the stand-out, a wine of particular structure and perhaps also worthy of a 92. I note that the Red Blend rated 90 in the Signature Red Blend Report earlier this year and I’d be inclined to rate the Carignan and Grenache much the same. The one wine I didn’t care for was the straw wine made from Syrah – just too much in every way.
