Lammershoek’s Mysteries Die Ou Man 2015

Not done yet.

The Mysteries range from Swartland cellar Lammershoek is set of alternative offerings intended for wine geeks, Die Ou Man 2015 being one such bottling, grapes from one of the oldest blocks of Tinta Barocca in the country, the vines planted in 1969 and 1973.

Grapes were 100% destemmed before fermentation in 2000-litre foudres and maturation lasting 11 months in old 500-litre barrels.

In-your-face aromatics of red and black fruit, fynbos, purple flowers, earth and spice precede a palate marked by good fruit concentration and freshness plus grippy tannins. Plenty of grunt despite a relatively modest alcohol of 13.68%, this is characterful rather than refined. Price: R285 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
