By , 27 October 2017

Stellenbosch property Lanzerac has a new set of wines called the  Keldermeester Versameling (Cellarmaster’s Collection) intended to “push the boundaries”. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Lanzerac Keldermeester Versameling Bergpad 2016
Price: R1140 per 6-bottle case (equivalent to R190 per bottle)
From a  single vineyard of Pinot Blanc. Fermented and matured for 11 months in old oak. A rather shy nose with vague notes of hay, peach, vanilla and spice. The palate is quite neutral but has a nice roundness to it while the finish is nicely savoury.

Editor’s rating: 88/100.

Lanzerac Keldermeester Versameling Prof 2016

Academic exercise.

Lanzerac Keldermeester Versameling Prof 2016
Price: R1860 per 6-bottle case (equivalent to R310 per bottle)
A blend of 60% Cinsaut from Paarl and 40% Pinot Noir from Walker Bay – an effort to find out what Professor Abraham Perold had in mind when he crossed the two varieties to create Pinotage in 1925. Vinified  and matured separately for six months in old French oak before blending and bottling. Some floral fragrance before cherry and plum, earth and spice. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins – nicely put together.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Lanzerac Keldermeester Versameling Dok 2015
Price: R1680 per six-bottle case (equivalent to R280 per bottle)
From a single block of Malbec. Spontaneously fermented before maturation in old oak for 16 months. Inky black in colour. Dark fruit, malt and spice on the nose. Good fruit density, bright acidity and smooth tannins. A striking wine but perhaps a bit short of nuance.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.
