Lanzerac Pionier Pinotage 2017

Swanky.

The wines of Lanzerac in Stellenbosch made by Wynand Lategan, incumbent since 2005, grow ever more accomplished, the pinnacle offering from this cellar being the Pionier Pinotage, the 2017 just released.

Grapes from a vineyard planted in 1996, vinification involved spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting 21 months in French oak, 50% new. On the nose, cherries and plums plus attractive oak-derived notes of vanilla, incense and spice. The palate shows good depth of fruit, bright acidity and firm but fine tannins, the finish long and savoury. It’s a carefully made, classy take on the variety. Price: R975 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
