Lemberg Amphora Selection new releases

By , 19 December 2025

The 2023 Amphora Selection Hárslevelü from Tulbagh property Lemberg was made by Anri Botha, and earned her a place in the Top 10 of the inaugural Next Generation Awards 2024 with a rating of 94. It stood out for both its individuality and assurance.

The follow-up 2024 release (R350) comes in at a slightly lower alcohol (13.8% compared to 14.56% for the 2023) and is once again compelling precisely because it resists easy categorisation. The aromatics are exotic showing citrus, melon, litchee, pineapple as well as hints of floral perfume and spice while the palate is voluminous – – pure fruit, bright acidity and a creamy texture, the finish gently savoury. A wine that invites discussion.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

The Amphora Selection Syrah 2023 (R380) is less convincing. Matured for 12 months in amphorae, the nose has a ripe red fruit, confectionary-like character accompanied by touches of earth and spice. On the palate, the wine is soft and seemingly sweet, making it immediately approachable but the absence of acidity and grip limits complexity. Ultimately, it doesn’t quite deliver the excitement that the élevage might suggest. Alc: 14.56%.

CE’s rating: 88/100.
