Longridge Misterie 2016

Misterie is the second vintage of the top-end Merlot from Longridge in Stellenbosch and, once again, it demonstrates how challenging this variety is under local conditions.

Matured for 24 months in French oak of which 80% was new, the nose shows cherries and plums plus elusive notes of violets, herbs and cocoa powder while the palate is medium boded with fresh acidity and fine tannins. It’s a wine of understated elegance but I suspect most punters will want a bit more drama given the price tag of R2000 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 90/100.
