Longridge Pinotage 2015
By Christian Eedes, 20 February 2017
Among those attempting to drive Pinotage in a more elegant and refined direction, you would have to include Stellenbosch property Longridge where Jasper Raats is in charge of winemaking, the 2015 vintage his most assured rendition of the variety to date.
Grapes from bush vines with an average age of 40 years, fermentation occurred spontaneously before maturation in a combination of new and used barrels for 16 months. Red cherry fruit, fynbos and violets on the nose, the palate medium bodied, fresh with lovely fine tannins, the finish gently savoury. It’s not necessarily a profound wine but it’s composed and carefully thought out and just so bloody likeable which, let’s face it, is not something we’ve always been able to say about South Africa’s very own. Price: R130 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.
