Lowerland Die Verlore Bokooi 2016

Not all wine has to be mind-bendingly complex to provide satisfaction. Die Verlore Bokooi 2016 from Lowerland in Prieska is guaranteed to put a smile on your face – amusing name, charming packaging, effortless drinking and an affordable price.

The Northern Cape town Prieska’s name is derived from the old Koranna words beris + gab, translating to “Place of the lost she-goat”, the Afrikaans name celebrating this while the mock cross-stich label has handmade art and craft connotations.

As for the wine, it is a blend of  35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot , 25% Shiraz and 5% Merlot with apparently JD Pretorius of Steenberg, Johnnie Calitz of Glen Carlou and  Lukas van Loggerenberg of Van Loggerenberg Wines all involved in the winemaking. On the nose, red and black fruit, some floral fragrance, a touch of mint and spice. The palate is juicy and fresh – good fruit concentration and just a little tannic grip. An uncomplicated but immensely appealing drop. The price, meanwhile, is R120 a bottle.
