Lowerland Tolbos Tannat 2015

Out of nowhere.

Winemaker Lukas van Loggerenberg is friends with Bertie Coetzee, whose family owns a property called Lowerland near Prieska in the Northern Cape where they farm cattle, maize and, believe it or not, wine grapes.

Van Loggerenberg and Coetzee recently released their first wine, Tolbos Tannat 2015, grapes transported overnight to Stellenbosch, 100% whole-bunch fermented and foot stomped before maturation in old oak. It’s a crazy-cool wine, the nose showing black berries but also flowers, herbs and spice while the palate has plenty of fruit concentration plus lots of tannic grip. Great winter drinking. Price: R280 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.
