Metis Sauvignon Blanc, a collaboration between Klein Constantia and Sancerre producer Pascal Jolivet, is emerging as one of the more interesting examples of the variety around. A “natural and minimalistic approach to winemaking” (for reach read: more oxidative than usual) supposedly leads to a wine which displays “typical and atypical Sauvignon Blanc traits”.
The 2014 (Wine Cellar price: R190 a bottle) shows mainly pear, peach and apple but also a little gravel-road dustiness as well as blackcurrant. It’s rich in the best way – really good palate weight and nicely coated acidity – while the overall impression is savoury rather than sweet. It’s serious and demanding but perhaps a shade less arresting than the 2013 (see here).
