By Christian Eedes, 20 August 2020
The wines of Wade Metzer, made from various vineyards in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, grow in sophistication with each passing vintage. Tasting notes and ratings for the 2018 reds as follows:
Metzer Mantra 2018
Price: R275
New. 55% Shiraz, 45% Cinsault. 30% whole bunch fermentation. Matured for 11 months in older oak. The nose shows red and black fruit plus a little white pepper. The palate is light and fresh with powdery tannins. Juicy, soft, and accessible.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
Metzer Shiraz 2018
Price: R275
30% whole bunch fermentation. Matured for 11 months in French oak, 10% new. Aromatics of blackberries, lily, black pepper, and earth. Dense fruit, lemon-like acidity, and nicely grippy tannins. Not overblown in any way and hence quietly gratifying to drink.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
Metzer Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Price: R275
87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Shiraz, 5% Cinsault. Matured for 15 months, 30% new. Red and blackberries, dried herbs, violets, earth, and spice on the nose. Seemingly medium-bodied (alcohol is 14.4%) and elegant with good fruit definition, fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish long and savoury.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
