Marelise Niemann of Momento says she generally picked a little earlier in 2021 and her usually very good wines are now even better for me, possessing that much more focus and vivacity. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Momento Chenin Blanc Verdelho 2021
63% Chenin Blanc (sourced from Bot River and Paardeberg) and 37% Verdelho (Bot River and Voor-Paardeberg). A floral top note and just a hint of reduction precede citrus and peach on the nose while the palate is electric with great fruit concentration and driving acidity before a saline finish. Extraordinary focus – very direct and arresting.
CE’s rating: 96/100.
Momento Grenache Blanc 2021
Includes 7% Verdelho. Grenache Blanc from the Voor-Paardeberg. Left on the skins for three days. Aromatics are difficult to describe but there are suggestions of citrus, peach, dried herbs and a hint of waxy character. The palate is dense and textured with snappy acidity with a pleasantly bitter bite to the finish. Has an exciting tension about it.
CE’s rating: 96/100.
Momento Grenache Gris 2021
Includes 7% Verdelho. Grenache Blanc from the Voor-Paardeberg. Left on the skins for seven days – pale orange in colour. Naartjie, orange, potpourri and subtle spice on the nose while the palate again has a dense core of fruit with punchy acidity and some grip to the finish – not totally refined but all the more interesting as a result.
CE’s rating: 94/100.
