Mother Rock new releases

By , 14 October 2021

Natural wines aren’t for everyone but if you are partial to them, then the Mother Rock portfolio from Johan ‘Stompie’ Meyer are must-buys. Tasting notes and ratings for the 2020 new releases (made in his new cellar on Piketberg property known as Platteklip) as follows:

Mother Rock White 2020
Price: R150
41% Chenin Blanc, 25% Viognier, 19% Grenache Blanc and 15% Semillon. 15% fermented on the skins for four weeks and also includes an element aged under flor. The nose is expressive if unusual with nutty, waxy overtones as well as citrus and stone fruit, herbs and flowers. The palate is lean, fresh and super-tasty, the finish long and dry. It’s a wine that manages to be simultaneously challenging and invigorating. As ever, it’s sure to be divisive –  I, for one, like it.

CE’s rating: 95/100.

Mother Rock Liquid Skin 2020
Price: R225
From Perdberg Chenin Blanc, this spent nine weeks on the skins. Potpourri and fynbos top notes before peach, apricot and ginger. The palate is again characterized by its driving acidity more than anything else, the finish long and savoury.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Mother Rock Holocene 2020
Price: R210
50% Carignan, 25% Mourvèdre, 20% Cinsault and 5% Grenache. 100% whole-bunch fermented. Matured for 11 months in old oak. Red and black berries, fynbos, floral perfume, spice and slightly wild, raw meat quality on the nose while the palate is tightly wound with pure fruit, vibrant acidity and nicely grippy tannins, the finish super-savoury. An edgy wine in every sense.

CE’s rating: 95/100.
