Mullineux Olerasay 3º

By , 5 August 2022

Olerasay, the sweet wine made from Chenin Blanc and using the solera fractional blending system including portions from consecutive vintages, by Andrea and Chris Mullineux has been highly praised but frankly I found the first two iterations ever so slightly overblown.

Olerasay 3º, however, is sublime. Containing every vintage from 2008 to 2021, total production amounts to 1 800 375ml bottles. This is down from 6 180 bottles in the case of 2º as the intention is to bottle every year going forwards.

Version 3º has super-complex aromatics of potpourri, fynbos, marmalade and dried peach and apricot while the palate has great depth matched by bracing acidity. The texture is thick but not unctuous and the wine moves well in the mouth. Wonderfully balanced, the finish is extraordinarily long and savoury. Price: R1 175 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 98/100.
