The white blend that is Laurens Campher from Stellenbosch property seems to get more serious with each passing vintage. The 2014 is a blend of 46% Chenin Blanc, 27% Sauvignon Blanc, 19% Verdelho and 8% Viognier and it was matured for eight months in 500-litre French oak barrels, 40% new.

The wine shows lemon and peach, spice and even white pepper plus a subtle earthiness. It’s medium bodied and very flavourful , the various elements sort of unfurling in the mouth – lovely upfront fruit before a long, pithy finish. It’s always been an intriguing wine but this seems to have extra focus and precision. Price: R120 a bottle.

Score: 91/100.
