By Christian Eedes, 5 April 2023
Myburgh Bros is a range of everyday drinking wines from Tyrrel Myburgh of Joostenberg wines, the new set of releases offering great quality relative to price. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Myburgh Bros Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2022
Price: R130
Grapes from a Paarl vineyard planted in 1984. Spontaneously fermented and kept on the lees for five months in stainless steel tank. Peach, citrus, fynbos, ginger and other spice on the nose while the palate has a dense core of fruit, zippy acidity and a pithy finish. Totally over-delivers.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
Myburgh Bros Kaalgat Steen 2022
Price: R150
Grapes from a vineyard that since 2021 that is left “slightly wild” – no cover-crop, minimal pruning – to increase resilience to disease and pests. Three batches involved, the first (57%) spent 12 days fermenting on the skins before being moved to old barrels; the second (28%) spent six days on the skins and the last (14%) was whole-bunch pressed and then fermented in old barrels. Enticing aromatics of potpourri, citrus, peach, nectarine and ginger on the nose while the palate is pure and zesty with a lightly grippy texture. Not too geeky, this has charm to go with real interest.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
Myburgh Bros Muscat d’ Alexandrie 2021
Price: R150
40% left on the skins for a week, 60% whole-bunch pressed. Heady aromatics – typical grapey note as well as white peach, litchi, flowers and herbs. The palate is juicy and fresh with a pithy finish.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
