Nederburg Heritage Heroes new releases

By , 10 December 2021

What next for Nederburg? Those in charge of winemaking are a fairly unsettled team, Niël Groenewald becoming managing director in early 2019 and Samuel Viljoen promoted to head winemaker only in May this year and of course we all await to see what might happen to the brand should Heinken be successful in its acquisition of current owner Distell.

Tasting three upcoming releases in the Heritage Heroes range suggest that the wines are as reliable as ever. Notes and ratings as follows:

Nederburg The Anchorman Chenin Blanc 2020
Price: R190
Grapes from a 1983 Swartland vineyard and a 1982 own vineyard. Consists of three separately vinified components: First portion fermented in barrels, some new; the second in stainless steel tank; and the third in clay pots. Pear, peach, citrus and herbs plus a leesy note on the nose while the palate has good volume – opulent fruit and bright acidity before a savoury, even slightly bitter finish. A polished wine with broad appeal.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Nederburg The Motorcyle Marvel 2018
Price: R225
44% Carignan, 41% Shiraz, 11% Grenache and 4% Mourvèdre, sourced variously from Paarl, Groenekloof and Wellington. Matured for 28 months in French and American oak, some new. Rather pronounced reduction before red and black berries, vanilla, pepper and spice on the nose while the palate shows good fruit definition, bright acidity and smooth tannins. Flavourful although some may find it a bit predictable.

CE’s rating: 90/100.

Nederburg The Brew Master 2018
Price: R225
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot sourced variously from Paarl and Stellenbosch. Matured for 28 months in French and American oak, 100% new. Red and black berries, cigar box and pencil shavings on the nose. Good fruit density and well managed tannins, the finish nicely dry without being too astringent. Strikes the right tone – neither too easy nor too demanding.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
