In an effort to simplify brand architecture, Nederburg’s top two offerings, Two Centuries and Private Bin have been consolidated into a single tier. In addition, MD Niel Groenewald is looking for greater refinement across the range.

What then of the current iteration of the top-end Cabernet Sauvignon? Grapes from both Darling and Simonsberg-Paarl, the wine was matured for 31 months in 100% new oak. The nose shows red and black berries, a subtle leafy note, pencil shavings and even a little oyster shell. The palate is pure and precise – it possesses lots of volume (alcohol is 14.85%) and yet it is not overdone, the tannins fine, the finish gently savoury. It’s already remarkably accessible and should have many fans. Price: R495 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
