Nederburg The Anchorman Chenin Blanc 2016

Doing the business.

The Anchorman Chenin Blanc 2016 from Nedeburg recently won a platinum medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 207for the best South African Chenin Blanc priced at over £15 and it must be said the tasters in question have done a good job.

Grapes are sourced variously from old untrellised vineyards in Darling, Durbanville and Paarl and the winemaking involved is nothing if not intricate with one portion of grapes fermented in second- and third-fill 300-litre barrels, a second in stainless-steel tanks, a third in very old, large vats and the remainder undergoing carbonic maceration. After fermentation, the various components were kept on the lees for nine months prior to final blending and bottling.

The result is really dramatic. A very expressive nose with a top note of honeysuckle before citrus, yellow peach and apricot plus some leesy complexity. The palate, meanwhile, is rich and full with nicely coated acidity. Layers and layers of flavour, the finish long and savoury. Price: R150 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.
