Neil Ellis Groenekloof Syrah 2022

By , 12 July 2024

Cinsault is often touted as a useful blending partner with Cabernet Sauvignon, serving to add some roundness and make the drinking experience less severe. Might it also work in combination with Syrah? It’s not a combination that’s too common but the Groenekloof Syrah 2022 from Neil Ellis sees 14.7% Cinsault added to 85.3% Syrah to good effect, winemaking further involving 25% whole-bunch fermentation, 30% stems returned, maturation lasting 14 months in 500-litre barrels.

The nose shows a hint of reduction before red and black berries, a touch of fynbos, cured meat and white pepper while the palate is big and juicy without being unduly sweet, the acidity moderate and the tannins soft (alc: 14.5%). It’s sure to have a lot of fans. Price: R180 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
