Should Oldenburg have a higher profile than it does? It has a prime Banghoek location but perhaps doesn’t get talked about with the same reverence as some of its neighbours like Delaire Graff, Thelema or Tokara.

A recent bottle of Chardonnay 2022, however, suggested that winemaker Nic van Aarde, who joined in November 2018 having previously worked at Warwick, is settling in just fine. Matured for 11 months in 228-litre barrels of which 29% were new, the nose shows struck-match, citrus, peach, vanilla and spice while the palate has succulent, sweet fruit offset by fresh acidity before a dry finish (alc: 13.56%). Creamy in texture with plenty of detail. Price: R350 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Oldenburg Chardonnay 2021 received rave reviews at the Decanter Awards (UK), The Trophy Wine Show (SA), Platter’s SA Wine Guide and the Global Fine Wine Challenge (AU). It sold out rather quickly at R260pb. Interesting that there doesn’t seem to be as much hype surrounding the current release as yet.
