The Breedekloof grows in stature as a district with each passing season and Olifantsberg established by the Leeuwerik family of the Netherlands in 2003 is proving itself to be one of the leading lights. Tasting notes and ratings for two new releases as follows:
Olifantsberg Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2022
Price: R132
Grapes from a certified heritage block planted in 1982 in the town of Rawsonville – winemaker Elizma Visser feels it’s important to work with older vines to understand vineyard development. Spontaneously fermented and matured for nine months in a combination of older barrels, foudre and stainless steel tank. The nose shows notes of hay, pear, peach, quince plus a hint of leesy complexity while the palate is seamless with good fruit concentration and well-integrated acidity, a slight bitterness to the finish lending interest. Alc: 13.5%
CE’s rating: 93/100.
Olifantsberg Grenache Rosé 2023
Price: R132
Strawberry, orange and spice on the nose while the palate has a dense core of fruit, bright acidity and a dry finish. Nicely weighted – alcohol is 13.5%.
CE’s rating: 90/100.

Definitely a farm to watch. Their two Soul of the Mountain blends are outstanding.
