Olifantsberg Silhouette 2014
By Christian Eedes, 27 January 2017
Worcester property Olifantsberg gained prominence when the 2013 vintage was judged best Shiraz-based red blend at last year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show (see here) and the follow-up 2014 is now available.
A blend of 85% Syrah (40% of which was sourced from the Swartland), 7.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Carignan, 2.5% Mourvèdre and 1.5% Grenache, the wine was matured for 10 months in barrels of various including 2 000-litre foudre.
The nose shows red and black berries and black olive while the palate shows good flavour concentration, lemon-like acidity and relatively smooth tannins. More depth (thanks to the dash of Cab?) but arguably less pizzaz than the 2013. Wine Cellar price: R185 a bottle.
#WinemagRating: 91/100.
