The Polkadraai property Felicia was acquire by the Yiannakis family, the late Com Yiannakis initially supplying grapes to cellars in the area. The experienced Matthew van Heerden was brought in as consultant and maiden vintage of Onoma Wines was 2015. Recently Com’s son, Blaise has given up a career in art and diamond dealing to run the farm full-time.

Onoma Chardonnay 2021
Price: R165
50% of the wine matured for six months in second-fill barrels. Exotic aromatics of lemon, orange, peach and pineapple, biscuit plus biscuit and some leesy complexity. Good fruit expression and tangy acidity before a savoury finish. Packs a lot of flavour given an alcohol of just 12.5% but not overblown.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Onoma Syrah 2021
Price: R250
Red berries, floral fragrance, white pepper and vanilla on the nose. While the palate is light and fresh with very fine tannins, the finish gently savoury. Not unappealing but arguably lacks some fruit weight and flavour intensity.

CE’s rating: 89/100.

Onoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Price: R250
Matured for 36 months in French oak. Aromatics of red currant, violets, herbs, undergrowth and cigar box. The palate has a pleasant coolness about it, the finish long and dry. Medium bodied and well balanced.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Onoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Price: R195
Matured for 24 months in older French oak. Dark berries, earth and chocolate on the nose while the palate is full-bodied, rich and smooth textured. Will please many but perhaps lacks some drive.

CE’s rating: 90/100.
