Osbloed Rooiperd Cinsault 2017
By Christian Eedes, 27 April 2018
Garagiste winemaker Bertus van Niekerk has made a terrific Cinsault under his Osbloed label. Grapes from an untrellised vineyard planted some 20 years ago in the Koelenhof area of Stellenbosch, winemaking involved 25% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting eight months in an older barrel.
On the nose, a fynbos top note before enticing red fruit – cranberry, cherry and pomegranate. The palate displays pure fruit, fresh acidity and crunchy tannins. It’s well balanced, super-tasty and lighter than an alcohol of 14% would suggest. Price: R300 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
