Overgaauw Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Turn up for the books.

Stellenboschkloof property Overgaauw has long made South Africa’s only Sylvaner but generally it’s a property known for its red wines rather than its whites. In the case of the Sauvignon Blanc 2015, however, winemaker David van Velden has come up with something pretty smart.

Grapes from a south-facing vineyard 175m above sea level, the wine spent a month on gross lees and then two months on fine lees. It’s modern in the best sense with aromas and flavours of black currant, white peach, granadilla and pineapple. Rich and thick textured, there’s nevertheless a good line of acidity and the finish is gently savoury. Price: R80 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
